Emerging Technologies 3 -- Scrapblog

For my third Emerging Technolgoies assignment I decided to do a scrapblog.  I love scrapbooking in my free time (when I have the money), and this was not nearly as satisfying as cutting the pictures and placing the stickers, but it has the same result, and I put it to music.  It was definitely A LOT less messy and easier.  I used scrapblog.com to complete this and it is about my little sister Sarabeth.
On the website you can change the pace of the slide show, but when I embedded it onto my blog, it doesn't give you that option. So you can either go through each slide by itself or you can just pause it at each slide. There is music, but it's not need to view the slide show. Enjoy!

Emerging Technologies 2

For my second Emerging Technologies Assignment I decided to do picnik.com.  I am part of a scrapbooking committee for an honor's program I am involved in, and love pictures and editing them and arranging them in beautiful ways.  Picnik.com allows for easy beautification of pictures.  I find this website to be much easier to used than any photoshop program I have used.  However, photoshop does have a lot more to do to a picture, but picnik.com has the simple things that work for projects I do.

This is a picture of my friend Katie and I at her first NBA game.  Here's an example of the simple fixes picnik offers that makes a picture so much more beautiful.  There's more life added to the picture.  There's a blemish fix (which I love the most!) and a teeth whitener.  For this picture I also used the "boost" effect, which gives it a brighter more lively look.

Here is a picture I did after my graduation.  On the left is my mom and I, in the middle is myself, and on the right is my dad and I.  Picnik allows you to change the style of the picture, in the sense of color, for example, in this one I used black and white.  Also, there are different frames available so that you can do something like this.

Here is one of my boyfriend Jameson and I at a superbowl party.  One of the cool things Picnik allows you to do is color in a certain portion of the picture where you want to show the color.  It gives you a curser and you pick where you want to see the color.  I picked blue for the Colts.  Also, you can add fun text to the pictures with shadows and different fonts.

Here is one of my friends Amanda, Alexandra, and I.  This one is an example of the boost, black and white, a fun frame, and fun text all in one.  You can find cute quotes online to add to pictures of friends and family that fit best for you!

Here is a picture of my friends Taylor, Katie, and I in biology.  I used the sepia feature along with fun texts.  I found the quote on some website I found on google!

Here is one with my brother Conor and sister Sara.

Katie and I again.

My boyfriend Jameson and I.
As you can tell I like the black and white feature with text on top.  With the first picture in this section of three, you can see a heart in the upper right hand corner and with the last picture you can see a heart in the lower right-hand corner.  Picnik has many differnt "stickers" as they call them to spice up your pictures.  With every holiday they have themed "stickers" and frames to make your pictures holiday themed!

I hope you guys enjoy picnik.com as much as I did!

Critical Thinking Module

Technology is such a common possession in modern days.  One can take a walk on campus and look around.  He or she will see many students on their cell phones or typing a paper on their laptops.  Technology is not only used for leisure, but also for help in the classroom.  Assistive technology is technology used by those with disabilities, so that they can better perform their every day needs.  They can range from walkers and wheelchairs to mobile devices.  The articles I chose were “Why Wordle?” by Steven W. Anderson and “5 Back to School Must-Haves for Innovative Educators” by Dana Lawit.  Anderson explains why “Wordle” can be a helpful tool in the classroom and Lawit describes five helpful items to enhance learning in the classroom.  Both articles engage the students in different ways than a plain lecture would.
In “Why Wordle,” Steven W. Anderson explains many different ways which “Wordle” can engage the students in the classroom.  Straight from wordle.net, “Wordle is a toy for generating ‘word clouds’ from text that you provide.”  One teacher said “I hate the question, ‘What are we doing today.’ I give word clues about what we are doing in class.”  With “Wordle” the teacher can ask the students what they will be working on today.  The teacher can insert key words and terms for discussion that day, and put more emphasis on the more important words.  The students can then use the “Wordle” document as a study guide when test time comes around.
“Wordle” can also be used as an art project.  The students could each type a poem or some kind of creative writing into the text box.  They click “submit,” select the colors and what directions they want their letters to go, and it is a piece of art.  Integrating the different subjects, such as art and math, or art and social studies, is also an important aspect to assistive learning.  A student may understand one subject, but not another.  Putting the two together can get a child who automatically shuts down to a certain subject, more awake and willing to participate.  Also, some children are turned off by the plain white paper and spelling lists and homework assignments.  “Wordle” can be used as a fun way to type out spelling words.  Making the learning environment more fun for the students, will make it more fun for the teacher as well.
“5 Back to School Must-Haves for Innovative Educators” by Dana Lawit combines the five items she believes are most important for a classroom to have.  Her top five “must-haves” are: a digital voice recorder, Google voice, Google Templates (through GoogleDocs), Libervox and Odiogo, and flip video cameras.  Sometimes students have a hard time remembering their thoughts for a paper to write or a test to study for.  With voice recorders they can make themselves a reminder and make it easier to write papers and study for tests.  Google voice is similar in that students can also record their voices to remember important information.  It is also a way for parents and teachers to keep in contact throughout the year.  It works as a cell phone and allows one to leave messages for and talk to one another.  One suggestion was to “give them [the students] a reflection question for homework along with you Google Voice number.  All their answers will be saved as audio recordings that are easy to share online.”
Google Templates helps teachers give the students all the information they need to be successful in working on a project.  A teacher can write up a template for a paper or project and the students can use the template and just fill in their information.  It is an easy way for the teacher to give feedback to his or her students immediately, rather than waiting to take the papers home and grade them for the next day.  “Libervox is a site that provides audio recordings of texts in the public domain.”  This is especially helpful to those who are lower reading level than the book itself.  Odiogo converts online text to speech, which is helpful for a teacher because he or she would save much more time printing articles, and helpful for the students because they can listen to the text rather than read it themselves.  Lastly, the flip video camera is helpful for video presentations and also interviews.  It is small and fits into the USB drive of a computer.
Many of these devices and websites are important in the classroom because they help the students become more engaged and excited to learn.  Many of Dana Lawit’s “must-haves” cost some money, but funding and grants are available for teachers who wish to engage their students in this way.  “Wordle” is a free website, so if the funding is not available, engaging the students in this way is not impossible.  Some of these items are not thought of by teachers to use in the classroom, and it makes me excited to start teaching!

All about me and tips for blogging!

My name is Taylor Pennell. I live in Indianapolis, and have since I was born. I have an 18 year old brother, 5 year old half sister, 13 year old step sister, and 21 year old step brother. Let's just say, we have a lot going on! :) I am studying elementary education, and am hoping to teach somewhere in the 3rd-4th grade range. I have been debating whether I want to go into social work or elementary education, but I do want to work with children. When I'm not at school, I play soccer, volunteer with my Sam H. Jones family (a service scholarship program), and work at Sears. I also love to watch movies, hang out with my friends and watch sports! I do not like snow... at all! Spring and Fall are definitely my favorite holidays. I also love to do arts and crafts, and I often use my five year old sister as an excuse to do many of them! :)

This blog experience was pretty easy for me.  In highschool we had to do a blog for my cadet teaching class.  It was a fun way to plan something new for students to use.  I had a difficult time remembering where I could edit my background, colors, fonts, etc.  If  you click on the design tab and then click on "Template Designer," you can make your background!  It's fun to mess with the different combinations and see what looks the best.  When you make changes, it shows you what you are changing so you can see. :)
